With 34 days remaining until the 2026 World Cup, we continue looking back at spectacular goals from World Cup history. Today's story features Uwe Seeler's remarkable header.
During the 1970 Mexico World Cup quarter-final between West Germany and England, Seeler whispered to Geoff Hurst as the teams walked onto the pitch: You have no chance, today is our Wembley. Hurst simply smirked in response. England, fielding an even stronger squad than the 1966 champions, took a 2-0 lead. Beckenbauer pulled one back for West Germany, but with fewer than ten minutes remaining, the Germans appeared to be running out of time.
Then Schnellinger lofted a high cross into the penalty area. Seeler, with his back to goal, could only attempt to flick the ball over the goalkeeper with his head. Incredibly, the header sailed over Peter Bonetti and into the net, forcing extra time. Gerd Muller eventually scored the winner for West Germany, ending England's title defense.
