From the 1974 Germany World Cup through the 1982 Spain World Cup, Poland scored an impressive 33 goals. During this period, they achieved more victories than any other team — 12 wins, surpassing Brazil's 11, West Germany's 10, and Italy's nine.

Poland unexpectedly secured their spot at the 1974 World Cup by holding England to a draw at Wembley, eliminating their rivals in the process. Goalkeeper Jan Tomaszewski was the hero despite being labeled a clown in gloves by Brian Clough earlier. In Poland's first World Cup appearance in 36 years, players like Wladyslaw Zmuda, Kazimierz Deyna, Grzegorz Lato, and Andrzej Szarmach propelled the team past Argentina, Italy, and Brazil to claim the bronze medal. Lato finished as the tournament's top scorer with seven goals.

Four years later, Poland topped their first-round group ahead of defending champions West Germany before falling in the second group stage. At the 1982 Spain World Cup, Poland advanced as group winners through successive rounds, lost to Italy in the semi-finals, and then defeated France 3-2 in the third-place match, with Zbigniew Boniek standing out as one of the tournament's finest performers.
