In Brazil, certain chants are inseparable from the FIFA World Cup. None is more iconic than legendary commentator Galvao Bueno's call to the three-time World Cup-winning goalkeeper: Go for it, the ball is yours, Taffarel!

Legendary goalkeeper Claudio Taffarel celebrated his 60th birthday on Friday, May 8, and remains an integral part of Brazil's daily operations. As Brazil's goalkeeping coach, he will once again bring his wealth of experience to Carlo Ancelotti's squad at the 2026 World Cup.

In a FIFA interview, the former goalkeeper reflected on his greatest moments with the national team, the evolution of the goalkeeper position, and Brazil's preparations. Taffarel noted that the goalkeeper position has transformed dramatically, with faster game tempo and increased involvement in play. Modern goalkeepers must initiate attacks and maintain possession, requiring improved footwork, quicker reactions, and greater physical stature.

Reflecting on his three different World Cup experiences, he recalled being young and energetic in 1990, though lacking experience. By 1994, playing in Europe had made him far more seasoned, and everything seemed easier. Taffarel believes Brazil always feels immense pressure, but that comes with wearing the famous yellow jersey. The expectation to perform is simply part of being Brazilian.
