Millie Bright, who captained England during their run to the final at the 2023 Women's World Cup, has announced her retirement from football with immediate effect. The 32-year-old center-back made 88 appearances for England, helping the Lionesses win the UEFA Women's Euro in 2022. Bright took over the captain's armband from the injured Leah Williamson at the World Cup the following year and inspired her team to reach the final, where they lost to Spain.

England head coach Sarina Wiegman paid tribute to Bright, noting that she played a huge role in the growth of women's football with both England and Chelsea. Wiegman highlighted Bright's incredible achievements and the respect she earned through her total commitment to the game. Bright also had an illustrious club career with Chelsea, winning 20 trophies. After suffering an injury, she struggled for playing time in recent months, leading to her decision to retire.
